Water retention during menstruation: causes and solutions

Do you feel bloated, heavier, or lower in energy just before your period? You are not alone. Water retention during menstruation is completely normal, but that does not mean you cannot do anything about it. With smart choices, movement, and extra support for your lymphatic system, you can help your body recover and feel lighter again.

What is water retention during your period?

Water retention means your body temporarily holds on to extra fluid. You may notice tighter clothes, a bloated stomach, sensitive breasts, or swollen hands and feet. It can feel like your body is working against you, but in many cases, this is simply part of your cycle.

How much heavier can you be?

Are you heavier during your period? That can happen. It is normal to gain around 0.5 to 2.5 kilos of water weight during your cycle. This is usually not fat gain, but fluid, slower digestion, and hormonal fluctuations. As your cycle continues, this often reduces naturally.

Causes: hormones during your cycle

In the days before your period, estrogen and progesterone levels shift. These hormonal changes can affect your fluid balance, salt balance, digestion, and cravings. As a result, your body may hold on to more fluid, and you may feel fuller, heavier, or less focused.

Recognising the symptoms

Common signs of water retention during menstruation include:

  • bloated stomach

  • heavy feeling in your legs

  • tighter clothing

  • swollen hands, feet, or ankles

  • sensitive breasts

  • lower energy and focus

Recognisable? Your body is asking for support, not restriction.

Tips to reduce water retention

Drink enough water, even when that feels counterintuitive. Your body flushes out fluid more effectively when you are well hydrated. Limit alcohol, choose fresh foods more often, and give yourself recovery moments. Think walking, gentle stretching, sauna, or breathwork to support relaxation and circulation.

Nutrition: salt, sugar, and fibre

Too much salt and sugar can make bloating worse. In the week before your period, choose more fibre-rich foods such as vegetables, fruit, oats, legumes, and whole grains. This supports digestion and helps keep your energy more stable.

Movement and circulation

You do not need to perform at your maximum. Light movement already helps. A walk, gentle workout, or mobility session can stimulate circulation and activate recovery. The result: less heaviness, more mental clarity, and often less tension in your body.

Lymphatic drainage massage as support

This is where you can make a difference. A lymphatic drainage massage with Ballancer Pro at The Reset Club uses gentle, rhythmic pressure to support the lymphatic system. This system helps your body drain excess fluid and waste products. Plan your session in the week before your period, for example, to work preventively on bloating, fluid retention, and discomfort.

When is water retention something to worry about?

Water retention around your period is usually harmless. Contact a doctor if you experience extreme swelling, severe pain, symptoms that last a long time, or complaints that strongly affect your daily life. This can help rule out underlying causes such as endometriosis, PMDD, or thyroid problems.

Manage water retention at The Reset Club

Your cycle can shift. Your energy can too. At The Reset Club, you help your body recover with treatments focused on balance, circulation, and physical reset. Lymphatic drainage can be a powerful step if you regularly experience water retention, bloating, or heavy legs around your period.

Other treatments

Want to deepen your reset? Combine lymphatic drainage with sauna, breathwork, or cold exposure for more energy, mental strength, and physical recovery. Give your body exactly what it needs to come back stronger.
